Things to know before coming to Mauritius- Part 3

By: Ralph Ramah

When tourists come to visit Mauritius, one thing they most probably like to do is to go shopping. Most tourists like clothes and accessories, especially hand made objects that are tagged ‘Made in Mauritius’. Fine shopping malls are available in busy areas of Mauritius such as Grand Baie, Port Louis, Flic en Flac and Curepipe among many others. Most of the time men wear shorts and T-shirts in Mauritius. Of course if you want to go to a hotel in the evening, then you may have to dress accordingly.

If you want to live in a villa or a holiday house, maids may be available to give you the service that you had expected. They may bring your clothes to the laundry and return them to you the next day. They may as well handle most of the household chores such as cleaning and making the beds. Also, you may avoid filling your suitcase too much so as to make some place for certain things that could bring back home from Mauritius. Mauritius has a reputed textile industry. So, instead of bringing many clothes with you, you might consider buying them in local shops and markets available all around Mauritius. Shops offer a wide variety of clothes ranging from Polo shirts to beach wears. These items may even be obtained at affordable prices in certain shops.

Moreover, if you have a baby, you could buy disposable nappies at very low prices. These are available in most shopping centres in Mauritius and they are around 3 times cheaper than those in Europe. The local currency in Mauritius is called the rupee. Mauritian rupees do not circulate outside Mauritius, so if you want to change your money, be sure to visit the money changers. Exchange rates may also vary from one bank to the other. Therefore, make a little research so that you get the best change value for your currency. Also, in most restaurants, hotels and shopping malls cards such as Visa, MasterCard and Maestro are accepted. Other types of cards such as American Express may as well be accepted in certain places.

Furthermore, the hot period in Mauritius starts in the month of December and ends in the month of June. However, the hottest periods in Mauritius lies in between December and March. During this time the temperature can easily reach around 30 degrees Celsius. Often, during the same period cyclonic conditions tend to occur in Mauritius. Such conditions can be recognized by continuous rainfall and elevated gusts of wind. It is advised, during this time, to stay inside and lock all doors and windows as precaution. On the other hand, a cool temperature prevails in Mauritius during the months of July and August. The temperature reaches around 26 degrees Celsius maximum at that time of the year.

As seen, the variation of temperature in Mauritius is minimal. For this reason, enjoyable and peaceful holidays can be spent in Mauritius practically all year long. Sometimes rain falls but it should not be a problem as these normally occur for a short time thus allowing you to get back to the sun and the sea.
