The Mauritius Kestrel, a tragic loss avoided

By: Ralph Ramah

The Mauritius Kestrel had been once the rarest bird of prey in the world. During the year 1970 the whole population of Kestrels had been lessened to only 4 specimens. As a matter of fact, the Mauritius Kestrel became one of the most endangered species of birds in the world. Fortunately, concerned authorities had become aware about the fact. So, programmes to capture, breed and then release the Mauritius Kestrel may have eventually saved it from extinction.

Nowadays, Mauritius Kestrels can amount up to around 350 all living in the wild. The breeding and release of these birds may have now stopped. However, every year during the summer the population of Mauritius Kestrels may be observed. In Mauritius, cyclonic weather normally occurs during the summer. Therefore, monkeyproof and cycloneproof artificial boxes may be placed in specific areas for young Kestrels shelter. At the same time, this method may as well allow experts to measure their sizes in order to know whether they are well grown for their age or are being affected with certain diseases. However, the Mauritius Kestrel may still be listed among the endangered species of birds. So, more years of work could be necessary to ensure that the existing population survives.

Moreover, the year 1715 saw the French settlement in Mauritius. Then in the year 1756, the Governor turned on the green lights for deforestation. At that time, deforestation had been done to allow the plantation of sugar cane fields in Mauritius. These days, around 3 percent of Mauritius may be covered with indigenous forests while only 1 percent may be in good condition. This can therefore be used as an indication to describe the near loss of the Mauritius Kestrel. In history, during deforestation, rats, cats and monkeys may have led to the destruction of most habitats. This created an imbalance in the ecosystem as most of the wildlife geared near to a tragic loss. Hopefully, the danger had been spotted and part of the natural beauty remained. Nonetheless, many species may still be threatened with extinction.

Furthermore, in the year 1988, a survey concerning forested areas in the region of Africa spotted Mauritius as the place that strictly needs to preserve its species of animals and plants. Long ago, Mauritius possessed flora and fauna that was unique in the world. Due to the depletion of forests in Mauritius, the species of plants and animals had been greatly affected. As a result, Mauritius may be reputed internationally as a location that needs to preserve its resources. Fortunately, a conservationist named as Gerald Durell visited Mauritius during the year 1976. He started programmes to preserve the Pink Pigeon, The Mauritius Echo Parakeet and the Rodrigues Fruit Bat. At that time the Government of Mauritius also took part in the conservation project.

Through the action of man, Mauritius had lost most of its flora and fauna. Nowadays, a lot of effort may be done to gradually reconstitute the ecosystem that long ago existed in Mauritius.
