The Different Types of Trout

By: Spence Talbots..

It goes without saying that there are a wide variety of fish you can focus on when you head out with your reel. It is undisputed, however, that the trout is one of the more common targets for most fisherman. Following is a breakdown of the different classes.

Trout are one of the more hardy and common fish you will find. There are a wide variety of types which we will cover, but they have common characteristics. They tend to have fins without spines and a small fin along the back near the tail area.

Trout are so commonly found that many people use the name to signify fish much the way people use the name coke to signify soda. They are found in lakes, rivers, streams as well as fresh and salt water the world over although they originated in Asia.

Everyone has their favorite trout, but the brown trout is probably one of the most common you will run across. It can be found in just about any type of water, and even has saltwater variations. In general, it is brown and prefers cooler water with cover.

If you love to use flies, the cutthroat is probably the trout at the top of your list. A variation of the salmon trout tree, it is found mostly in Canada and the northern US. The fish is so varied that it is difficult to describe it. Colors, size and characteristics vary.

Another common and much loved trout is the rainbow. Another member of the salmon family, it is known by its reddish or pinkish stripe on the side. Rainbows prefer cooler water and are freshwater fish. A variation, however, prefers the saltwater environment.

When it comes to trout, the steelhead carries a special place in most peoples’ hearts. A good game fish, it is the saltwater version of the rainbow. It tends to be much bigger than its brother fish and is distinguished by its lack of a strip on its side.

The lake trout is better known as the mackinaw. It is found throughout many larger freshwater lakes in North America and is considered a great game fish. It is also the biggest trout on average with the world record being 65 pounds.

While the above represents a solid breakdown of the various trout you will run into, there is a far bigger selection in nature. Many of the species have different strains that have evolved over time, so look for the tell tale signs.
