Office Design- How to Get Started?

By: Jessica Thomson

When you think of office design the first thing to be given consideration is the space and the staff that is going to occupy the space within the office for most of the man hours.
At this initial stage it is equally important to consider the number of people who are going to visit your office. These people could be your business associates or prospective clients / customer or even clients / customer. Equally important is the nature of the business and the professional attitude that you want people around you to know. The nature of the business could be varied and the Office Design based on this nature can be broadly segregated into Traditional office design, Modern office design, Basic office design, and Whimsical office design. Once you have decided upon the type of the office design the other considerations follow. Sometimes because of change in management or the business altogether there is office refurbishment which is also known as office refurb.
When you want to design the office, the purpose of the office is also to be taken into consideration. The purpose of the office could be just meeting people one after another. On the contrary if the purpose of the office is to call a number of people at the same time or a call center then a number of computers along with the tables and chairs have to be arranged.
Sometimes privacy and confidentiality has to be maintained. This is applicable for doctors and lawyers. The office design in case of such occupations has to be sound proof so that the code of secrecy is maintained.
The office design along with the interior decoration and furniture should be comfortable for the employee, the employer and even the people who visit the office. It is often seen that the office design speaks of the office plans and office fit out. The office design should give a feeling of competence.
Besides the above mentioned issues it is always better to consider some other factors before starting the office design or office refurbishment (office refurb).
1 Budget: Take the budget constraints into consideration and spend within limits.
2 Availability of Space: As mentioned above take into consideration not only the number of people but also the leg space or leg room required for movement without anyone else getting disturbed. The size of the furniture should be with reference to the space available.
3 Theme: If you have decided to opt for traditional furniture then you should not buy metal furniture that looks modern.
4 Functionality: Decide the type of furniture and accessories that are needed. When you are deciding about this give due importance to the size and the number of drawers that are needed.
