Mauritius-Ile aux Aigrettes, an island in regeneration

The island of Mauritius is a worthwhile place to go. Visiting Mauritius can be exciting, especially where nature exceeds your expectations. Hiking in the Black River Gorges can be one of the most sensational things to do during your trip to Mauritius. Unfortunately, some elements of nature are being depleted as Mauritius close to the loss of some of its rare plants and animals. Fortunately, the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation had been around to preserve these species so that the balance in nature could be maintained.

During the year 1987, the MWF obtained Ile aux Aigrettes on lease. The island was at that time in a bad condition. After considerable work carried out by the professionals of the MWF, the island has been partly restored. However, the MWF had as aim to return Ile aux Aigrettes back to its original state as to when it was around 400 years ago when people first landed in Mauritius. Nowadays, after a lot of effort, the island has begun to take its shape. It represents the enormous amount of work that the MWF has been doing down the years. Ile aux Aigrettes today contains several species of plants and animals unique to Mauritius and found nowhere in the world. By looking at Ile aux Aigrettes, one could have a glimpse of how Mauritius was before man started to cut his way through civilization.

Moreover, the MWF is a non profit organisation, so relies on charities and donations to finance its various projects. As a matter of fact, in the year 1995, the MWF decided to promote ecotourism in Mauritius. This was done to increase public awareness and at the same time to create income to fund the necessary restorations for Mauritius and Rodrigues. Thus, Ile aux Aigrettes turned out to be a major site for promoting ecotourism in Mauritius. Therefore, infrastructure was made available as well as a track was opened. Subsequently, the island opened its doors to tourists in the year 1997. Consequently, important guidelines were set so that Ile aux Aigrettes could become a suitable place for tourism development in Mauritius. The MWF aimed at making Ile aux Aigrettes a place that would be known worldwide for the unique experience that it can offer.

However, the MWF respects the stipulations set by the international rules of ecotourism. As such, all buildings may have been constructed using existing remains of buildings from World War II. On the other hand, paths may have been built while making sure that minimum harm is made to the flora. Information panels may have been placed all along the track and tours are accompanied by professional guides. The main reason for allowing tourists to visit the island may be to help finance the restoration of the island. This can as well let words propagate about the wonderful work carried out to protect the nature in Mauritius.

So, during your trip to Mauritius, going to Ile aux Aigrettes can be worthwhile, especially if you are a nature lover. This may indicate the intensity of work that is being done to reconstruct a Mauritius as it was four centuries ago.
