Making the Best out of Your Procrastination

By: David T.

So you wait until the very last minutes or hours to complete a project? That isn’t that unusual in today’s society. Most people hit either end of the spectrum, being one who completes a project as soon as they get an assignment or a procrastinator who waits until right before the assignment is due to begin and complete the task. Not many people work a little bit at a time, working on their ideas and gathering information at a steady, regular pace.

But you’ve come to terms with your ability to procrastinate and pull off a successful presentation, report, or whatever the task may be. Every time you are assigned a project, you are filled with a little bit of excitement and a little bit of dread. When you get an assignment you know that the weekend before or day before it’s due you will begin on the assignment and work so dedicatedly to it that nothing else can get in your way while working.

Yet, you can still improve on your work while remaining a procrastinator. You can utilize the skills you’ve perfected as a procrastinator to begin thinking about your work over the weekend or in the hours right before you’d actually begin on an assignment.

One thing you can do is simply make a mental check list while you are having fun right before you begin on the job at hand. Think “I should be doing this,” or “I should not be doing that,” etc. making sure what you need to do to complete the assignment and in what order you should be doing these things when you do begin working on the project.

Of course, it does all depend on why you procrastinate. Many people have many different reasons for procrastinating. Some just dread working on an assignment; they dread the pressure that is being put on them to give a top performance in front an important group of people. Some people lack interest in the project. Others will just get stuck on one little aspect of the project and that will keep them from doing anything else on the project or moving forward in another direction.

But once you have identified what is causing you to procrastinate, then you can decide what to do next. If you just want to wait it out and do everything all at once in an (un)organized frenzy, or if you want to take tiny steps to plan out your last minute efforts to do an assignment (even if it’s only just in your head), either is an option for you.

Whatever you decide to do in the end, don’t take procrastination as a negative aspect of your working ability. Take it as a part of your personality and work ethic and use it to your advantage. If you’re able to at least think a little bit in advance about what you’re going to do when you actually begin an assignment then it should make the stress a little lighter.
