How bad can GAD hit a person?

By: Roberto Bell

Anguish, fear and worries are part of of everyday lives of huge number of anxiety disorders victims from all around the World. Ordinary fear and anxiety are an essential part of human existence. They help us to escape nasty and unsafe situations and therefore play alarming or adaptive function.

The fear is every time related to a especial object or a situation and anxiety is an indeterminate emotional event. The threat in Generalized Anxiety Disorder is less obvious, unclear, so it is often described as a floating fear. When the fears, worries and anxiety begin to dominate and control persons life, when they begin to seriously interfere with their family, social and business activities, then we can say that the individual certainly suffers from some kind of anxiety disorder.

Psychological symptoms of anxiety disorders are overwhelming fear and trembling, feeling of constant stress or internal turmoil, hard to concentrate. The person gets disturbed without a reason and can become extremely sensitive to louder noises. Also, in most cases anxiety disorder victims develop insomnia (they have great difficulties sleeping, they wake up many times during the night and may have unpleasant dreams during their sleep.)

The most occurring physical symptoms of anxiety disorders are: palpitations or irregular heart beats, feeling problems swallowing, dry mouth, difficulty breathing (lack of air), chest pain, frequent urge to go to the toilet, weakened sexual functioning, noise in ears, pins and needles in hands and feet, trembling hands and many more, depending on the severity.

Anxiety disorders could be divided in seven main categories: Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Panic Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder or Social Phobia, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Specific Phobia and Agoraphobia.

The main characteristics of Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) are: ongoing unreasonable worries, anxiety, fear and expectations of something horrible that might happen, which occur most of the days in a period of at least 2-6 months. The victims find impossible to control their worries which are greatly exaggerated considering the situation. Adult patients suffering from GAD often worry about everyday life, the responsibilities in the workplace, finances, family health, unpleasant things that may happen to their kids, family members, loved relatives etc.
Unreasonable fear completely overpowers the patients and makes them to feel paralyzed, hopeless and under threat.

Generally speaking, GAD is best treated by blend of psychotherapy (Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy) and drugs. Drugs mostly used are Antidepressants from the group of Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI) and at the beginning of the therapy Benzodiazepines. Some medication free treatments and methods developed by recovered victims are also producing remarkable results and can be obtained on the internet.
