Celebrating Halloween Birthdays

By: Roberto Bell

Halloween birthdays used to have a lot of superstition attached to them. It was believed that people born on Halloween would have the ability to talk to the dead, or were creepy and odd. Thankfully, much of that superstition has been forgotten in today’s modern age, and Halloween can actually be a very fun day to have a birthday party.
Of course, you don’t have to be born exactly on Halloween to have a Halloween-themed party. Anyone with an October birthday could choose to go this route. Of course, being a fan of Halloween is essential; otherwise you might as well go with a traditional birthday party theme.
Getting invitations
Finding invitations for a Halloween birthday party can be a bit of a challenge. Often, you can find either Halloween invitation or birthday invitations, and you could choose to use either as you deem appropriate. However, you might consider creating your own custom creations. To do this, think of ways that your favorite Halloween icons can be portrayed celebrating a birthday. Have a jack-o-lantern illuminated by a birthday cake; show a witch wearing a party hat in place of her typical black one, or a picture of Count Dracula carrying a birthday present. When designing your own, the options are limitless.
Decoration and cakes
With party decorations, you might want to go with a more fall theme than the traditional black and orange of Halloween. Oranges, reds, and yellows can all have a Halloween theme to them without being as dark and dreary. Plus, it is easy to find colorful balloons, streamers, and other party decorations in these colors than it might be in orange and black.
For the cake, consider going with a birthday cake and adding Halloween themes, like pumpkins and witches, or go with a Halloween birthday cake and add some birthday themes like balloons and packages. Again, it might be easier to get a plain cake and decorate it yourself.
Of course, any of these ideas are null and void if the birthday celebrant tends to prefer a more gothic taste in decorating already – then a strictly Halloween theme may be entirely appropriate.
Games and activities
Most party games work equally well at a Halloween party as at a birthday party. Pin the tail on the donkey can be pin the stem on the pumpkin. You can buy pumpkin or witch shaped piñatas. Or, you can choose to do some things that are strictly in keeping with the fall season, like bobbing for apples, costume contests, and pumpkin carving/painting.
Food
Besides the required birthday cake, you can choose to serve food as well if your party coincides with a meal time. Depending on how much you want to incorporate the Halloween theme, you can decide to include Halloween treats or go with more traditional party fare.
The one thing to remember about a Halloween and birthday party combination is to make sure that the birthday boy or girl doesn’t feel like he or she is missing out on the special day because it is being overshadowed by Halloween. If this is a concern, then two separate parties might be a better alternative.
