Are You a Candidate to Be Struck by Panic Disorder?

By: Roberto Bell

When a person walking through the forest encounters a poisonous snake or some other wild animal, their normal respond would be to panic and to run away from the beast as quickly as possible.

When the identical feelings of fear and horror come along with no sound reasons and if they occur in a very secure surroundings (while jogging on the beach or enjoying a movie at the local cinema) you do not have to be a doctor to conclude that something is wrong with your health. Witnessing a few of such episodes in relatively short time frame (a few days or weeks) could be an indication that the person has developed panic disorder.

At the very early stages the victims become extremely frightened and confused. The non psychological signs of panic disorder that might include palpitations, nausea, shortness of breath, dizziness, excessive sweating, jelly legs etc. make the patient to think that something entirely different is happening inside their bodies. People usually ask for help at the wrong places. They go to a whole army of various doctors undergoing numerous checks and tests because they are sure that the problem is with their heart, lungs, blood pressure and so on. The mental health practitioner is usually last on their list to visit.

During the panic attack victims might believe that they have some kind of the malignant illness, they are going to die on the spot, going insane or to lose control of themselves. Panic attack can occur every time when the victims find themselves in a particular environment or it can just happen without a visible cause regardless of the situation. A fair number of individuals suffering from panic disorder also develop agoraphobia (fear of open or crowded surroundings from which in a case of panic attack would be difficult to run away or to seek and receive assistance.)

Panic attacks can even hit while sleeping. Hottish weather also plays a role in panic disorder because victims have more panic attacks during the warm summer months. The main reasons for this are that hot weather accelerates pulse, stimulates dizziness and dehydration. Also, during these months people are more likely to spend their time outdoors so there is a much higher prospect of running into unacquainted and dreadful situations and surroundings.

Despite the fact that the real causes of panic disorder are not known, some researches have shown that some kinds of people are more likely to suffer of this disorder than the others. This group includes people who are timid by nature and who tend is to be worried and over concerned about every aspect of their lives. They constantly question their own abilities and are always unsure whether they are good enough to finish their goals and responsibilities. The signs of their insecurity and fears are often noticeable from their early childhood (blushing, palm sweating, palpitations, not feeling comfortable in front of older, unfamiliar people or in front of the authoritative figures.) Those kids spend a lot of time daydreaming and imagining things and possess no agonistic spirit and behavior. When they sleep they might also experience dreadful dreams and have accidents with bed wetting. Their perception of other persons is sort of naive because they cannot observe the hidden intentions of mean people. Even after repetitive and numerous disappointments they do not change their behavior.

It is essential to state that panic disorder is very common medical condition in our society. Although persons who show some of the previously mentioned symptoms in their childhood have a higher chance of being affected by panic disorder later on in their lives, not everyone will. On the other hand, some very confident persons who are easygoing and have no obvious problems in their lives may be struck by this condition with no warnings or a valid explanation.
